The “war for talent” was a term coined by McKinsey in 1998. McKinsey predicted that organisations’ future success would depend on how well they could attract and retain employees.
This war is tired and it seems that everyone has lost: enter stage right a cast of underperforming and miserable employees and enter stage left, business owners bemoaning a talent shortage.
The reason for this disconnect is that organisations have been fighting the wrong war.
The real war you should be fighting is the war to develop talent: how do you make the best use of the people already working in your organisation? This question should be simple to answer, but it is fraught with difficulty and seems to have most organisations stumped.
Want to win the war for talent? Figure out how to help your employees unleash their unique strengths and talents within your organisation and you’ll be miles ahead of your competitors.
